If acne knocks on your door, the best thing you can do is put yourself in the hands of professionals and, above all, stay calm.
There are many skin problems that can develop in youth, since it is a time of change and development towards maturity. One of the most common pathologies is, without a doubt, acne. Experts from the Spanish Academy of Dermatology and Venereology (AEDV) assure that "78% of the population will suffer from acne throughout their lives, the maximum age of prevalence of the disease being between 14 and 16 years."
But, although we think that it is a disease of adolescence, it is increasingly common to suffer it in adulthood. Luckily, having pimples is no longer taboo. In fact, there have been many celebrities who have made the problem visible on social networks and those who have actively fought so that acne does not become a source of ridicule by others.
But why does it appear? It can be avoided? Can we do something to remove it? We tell you everything you need to know.
1. What is acne?
"Acne consists of a chronic inflammatory process of the pilosebaceous follicle, which we know as a 'pore' or hair follicle. It affects about 80% of the adolescent population and 8% of the adult population between 25-35 years of age. For different reasons, such as excess sebum, physical occlusion (mask, occlusive cosmetics) or stress, it ends up producing an occlusion of the follicle that leads to inflammation, which is what we know as 'pimple' or 'pimple' " explains Dr. Pedro Vilas Boas, a dermatologist at the Laser Medical Institute (IML).
2. Why is it produced?
Unfortunately, it is not known exactly what causes acne. "It is postulated that it could be due to an imbalance of the microbial flora (skin microbiota). This imbalance of the skin with acne could be related to other factors such as diet, hormonal changes, as well as genetic predisposition", he tells us María José Tous, pharmacist and founder of Laboratorios Kosei.
3. Can it be prevented?
"With certain daily routines or skin care we can avoid a large part of mild acnes, but other more complex types of acne need a dermatological assessment for their control. As basic advice, we must wash the seborrheic areas of the face daily, we can exfoliate those same areas once or twice a week and avoid moisturizers or occlusive cosmetics ", adds the expert.
And why do you have to exfoliate the skin? "To remove dead cells and prevent them from obstructing the entrance of the pilosebaceous canal, giving rise to comedones, papules, pustules and, in more severe cases, nodules and cysts", points out María José Tous.
4. What can you do if you get a pimple?
The most important thing is not to touch it! "This manipulation of the lesions in the inflammatory phase is responsible for the vast majority of acne marks. To facilitate their rapid resolution, it is helpful to use antiseptic or antibiotic solutions, when prescribed by the dermatologist, and also hydrocolloid patches that they facilitate the resolution and healing of the lesions, "says the dermatologist.
5. And what can I do about stains and marks?
"This type of stain is called post-inflammatory pigmentation," explains the pharmacist. "In these cases there is an increase in melanin caused by the way the skin heals after an injury or inflammation such as acne. To treat this type of spots, it is recommended to use products that exfoliate the skin , which help accelerate the renewal of damaged skin and decrease the synthesis of melanin, the pigment that gives the skin a dark color. For brands, the recommendation is a product that improves the formation of new collagen that helps to fill in that little depression that occurs in post-acne brands ", adds María José Tous.
"The severity of acne spots / marks depends fundamentally on the duration of the inflammatory phase, so it is essential to control the lesions as soon as possible to avoid their appearance. Once they are formed, they usually require a more complex management such as the use of lasers or 'peelings'. We can use topical products with retinol, niacinamide or kojic acid to facilitate their correction, but generally they are substances that require adjustment of the guideline by a dermatologist ", highlights Dr. Pedro Vilas Boas.
