Holi India Festival 2022 – Festival of Colors in India
If India is a place that impresses travelers with its surprising colors, these days it becomes an explosion of color. In the spring, the Holi India and Nepal Festival is celebrated in style, probably the most colorful festival in the world, which is celebrated every year with the arrival of the spring equinox, the day after the full moon of the month of Phalguna. Although in India almost all the celebrations have a religious background, the Holi Festival has a more playful and special character since it manages to break down, at least during these days, the social barriers between rich and poor or between men and women, since all they enjoy the party together.
Holi Festival India 2022 - Origin of the Holi Festival
The origins of Holi go back to different Hindu mythological legends, but the most outstanding is the one that tells that the king of demons Hirania Kashipú, who considered himself to be a true God, tried to assassinate his own son Prajlad several times. for his devotion to another God, in this case Vishnu, since Kashipú had ordered that only he could be worshiped in his territory.
After many unsuccessful attempts to kill Prajlad, Kashipu ordered his daughter Hólika, immune to fire, to enter a bonfire with her brother to burn him. But the king's daughter would burn at the stake, while Prajlad would survive thanks to Vishnu's protection. This fact is associated with the celebration of the victory of good over evil.
Over the years, it was established that the first day of the Holi Festival starts with a bonfire that represents the place where Hólika died and, on the second day, called Dhulhendi, the aforementioned triumph of good over evil is celebrated.
What is done in the Holi festival in India?
During this celebration, people paint themselves and throw colored powders called Gulal. Formerly, these colored powders were initially prepared with medicinal herbs, but over time synthetic materials were included so that the powder would last longer in the body and in order to experience new shades. However, the colors used are not chosen at random, but must convey joy and positive wishes. Thus, certain colors have been maintained as traditional within the celebration, such as yellow that alludes to piety, orange represents optimism, blue symbolizes calm, red is used for love and purity, and green for the vitality.

Where is it better to celebrate Holi 2022 in India? better places
Keep in mind that Holi is a celebration with family and friends, like almost all in India (Diwali, Dusshera...). There are no localized celebrations such as Western festivities with orchestra, dance, etc… Having said that, it should be noted that people in India are very open, especially on Holi, and visitors are always welcome to celebrate.
The Holi Festival is celebrated with much more intensity and participation in North India than in the rest of the country. It is also celebrated in Nepal and in Hindu communities around the world. Within the northern part, the celebrations that in our opinion may have the most charm are in Udaipur, Varanasi, Jaipur, Mathura and Vrindavam... Perhaps the latter two are more chaotic and you have to be a little more careful, as we indicate in the next section.
In bigger cities like Delhi, it might be a good idea to celebrate it in some parks or in the backpacker area of Paharganj.
There are also private parties in some hotels, private gardens, etc… You can consult us.
Tips to Celebrate Holi Festival in India
If you plan to attend, we advise you to put on the oldest and most torn clothes you have, since possibly at the end of the day you will have to throw it all away. But, above all, get a good handful of colored powder and some water balloons and get ready to participate in one of the most spectacular parties in India.
The hair can also be covered, since the paint is less easily removed. And be very careful with phones, cameras... because nothing is spared from the colored powders.
Is holi in India dangerous?
Holi in India is a festive and celebration day, in which all kinds of people mix in an atmosphere of joy, it is not dangerous at all. But you have to take into account some details to prevent celebrating Holi from becoming an unpleasant experience.
At Incredible India we usually advise caution and common sense to our clients when celebrating Holi. It is a very crowded party and in the that a lot of alcohol is drunk, so sometimes some people do not know how to behave properly. In India many people are not used to drinking and in this type of festivities they can get a little out of control.
For this reason, we usually recommend avoiding large crowds of people, groups of people drinking or drunk, and we generally ask that common sense be followed, especially women. It is better to celebrate in the morning since as the day progresses people drink more. Also for the same reason it is not convenient to use the roads on Holi day.
With a minimum of care we can celebrate Holi without any problem: Happy Holi 2022!
